No, she's not a little 16 year-old. She's 10. But she's big enough to reach the pedals and see over the steering wheel, so it's time to get started.

Took her three tries. On the fourth she was also able to stop without stalling it, too.

She also checked the "L" in my new LSD - yup, still working.

We quit while I still had a working clutch. We also need a bigger parking lot next time.

That's awesome! I was just under 10 when my father started me on the manuals we had lying around (a 53 Willys army jeep in my case). It's as life skill like riding a bike.

If she gets lucky this will be her first car.

She's driven it a lot, but usually in my lap. I get it into second and she does laps around our church. I tried to teach her to shift last year, but she was too short to brace against the back of the seat. But she's growing like a weed now!

You sir, are much braver than I. I wish you the best of luck teaching your little girl to drive at the age of 10.

I could probably start now, my oldest is almost 11 and is tall. I don't think the kiddos mother would be very happy teaching her to drive.

How does the other parent feel about this?

Here's to Opposite Pops (Popposite Lock?)! Lessons are years away, but planting the bug early. The Vanagon through the window is what I learned in, lo these many years ago. Too sentimental to sell it.

That's Awesome! I tried to teach my 17 year old sister to drive stick and even after demonstrations, explanations, and 45 minutes of practice, she decided she didn't want to learn anymore; hasn't tried since. It's not like i was trying to get her to learn, she asked me.

E36 M3 sedan is a pretty awesome first car. I'd have hurt myself badly, but then again I'm a guy. I was lucky to have an 84 Rabbit. Minimal HP -> minimal chance of injury.

Nice! I taught myself the concept at 7 via Gran Turismo, and told my dad I could do it. I wasn't able to reach the pedals so i sat on his lap, but after some time managed to take off and stop without stalling.

So great to see parents teaching their kids, much more to see it at such a young age

I've been doing what the other dads here are doing since they were little.

We go on weekend afternoons to deserted church parking lots.

They eventually graduate from just steering to gas and brakes. That took a while to get down well, but now my oldest (pictured) is practically trying to autocross it.

I'll occasionally take them out in the Escalade, which means full control for the oldest two, and sitting alone for the oldest. I haven't had to bang the shifter into park yet while we're moving - knock on wood!

As I said above, I tried to teach her last year, but she wasn't quite tall enough.

My wife doesn't care - 10,000 hours and all that. My oldest can drift their cheapo Razer go kart like a champ, too. That experience counts for something. The better they are before starting driver's ed, the better in my book.

The car is more at risk than the kid. And there's always the handbrake.

It definitely worries my wife. Luckily a new Camry makes more power (well, stock at least), so that argument is getting easier over time.

But no promises. We'll just see how it goes.

Maybe it is time I got with the program and picked up some Razer go karts.

That's awesome, my sisters father taught me to drive manual when I was 9 or 10. Took a whole day before I got it down good.

Step 1: She needs this sticker on her lunch box, a folder, or bedroom door.

You have to do what we did when our oldest son tried to spit the bit. We sold our last automatic car and replaced it with a manual Mazda6. Once he had no choice, he learned.

My dad started me at 7. I'm grateful to him to this day.

Of course that was in a VW bus. Not a goddamn M3. You're a madman.

I don't have a VW bus to use - I wish I did! I'd rather it just stalled out than melt the clutch and smoke the tires!

We have 3 Autos and my manual. My mother, father and I know how to drive stick, but my mother won't get one because of her daily commute. My dad wants to get a manual but since neither of my sisters will learn, he is holding off until we all go to college (all of us will by 2017.) Needless to say, they aren't pushing it at all.

You are brave. And exceptionally awesome. Who learns stick on an M3/4/5? Incredible.

Grats to you! I learned at age 10, in an empty stretch of private farm road. Clutch and all. I had a problem with the brakes, being used to bicycles, I would just slam the brakes and leave a nice patch of rubber behind the poor Ford Corcel II '76.

No matter how illegal it is to drive at this age, I see no harm in teaching in a place where nobody can get hurt.

You can spoil her after she gets her license and let her drive an auto!
